The Social Networking Glitter Meetup

The Social Networking Glitter Meetup is a space to connect with others in the community. Join us to talk about whatever you want: a project that you are working on, an event that caught your attention, general questions about the experience of working in the digital rights field, your insights on the latest big tech nonsense, and even your vacations. We will be happy to hear from you!

What is Glitter Meetup?

Glitter Meetup is the weekly town hall of the Internet Freedom community at the IF Square on the TCU Mattermost, at 9am EST / 2pm UTC. It is a text-based chat where digital rights defenders can share regional and projects updates, expertise, ask questions, and connect with others from all over the world! Do you need an invite? Learn how to get one here.

Notes

We talk with a participant that shares with us that they are focused on issues of caste, gender, sexual orientation, race, identity, and technology, employing an intersectional and feminist lens. This person is interested in exploring the intersectional ties between gender and tech in terms of access, information controls, safe digital spaces and policy and governance through rights based perspective.

Was there a specific event that made you begin exploring these issues at the intersection of Tech?

While working in the last organisation, Internet Democracy Project, I started diving deep into how the present inequalities are mirrored in the digital spaces and the government looking at data as sort of commodity to make money with instead of putting protocols in place so it could be saved from being misused. Right then Covid hit and we could see the public data becoming more prominent. Learning about and from people who have been in the field much longer than I am, I realised there is so much I could contribute to, that's what brought me here.

After this, we talked about our favourites movies :)
