Spyware attacks against human rights defenders in the MENA region

Join Mohammed Al-Maskati for a conversation about the Increasing deployment of surveillance technologies and the use of spyware by state actors to target human rights defenders in the MENA region. Our featured guest will present the findings of some of the most recent investigations by Front Line Defenders on the use of pegasus against activists and journalists in different countries in the region. You're invited to join the Q&A to address the topics of the harmful impact of surveillance tech on vulnerable communities in the region; the absence of regional accountability and litigation mechanisms and the threats to the future of activism.

Mohammed Al-Maskati is the Middle East and North African Digital Protection Coordinator at Front Line Defenders and Recipient of a Human Rights Heroes Award 2019 by Access Now. He was shortlisted in Index on Censorship’s Freedom of Expression Awards 2019 and Security Serious Unsung Heroes Awards 2020. Member of the panel of experts for the Dutch Government Tulip Prize for Human Rights 2021. He discovered and investigated phone hacking of human rights defenders in Palestine, Bahrain, Jordan, El Salvador and other countries. He is the founder of Digital Protection, a website that provides digital security resources, guides and updates in Arabic.
