This is a workshop targeted towards community leaders and community managers who lead and care for members of the digital rights activist community. 

In this workshop, participants will be provided with information about the basics of mental health literacy, the global burden of mental illness, and the stigma of mental health, with a special focus on these issues in vulnerable and marginalized communities. 

In addition, participants will be trained on the basics of peer-led psychosocial support and community engagement using the principles of Interpersonal Counseling (IPC), which is an intervention designed by Dr. Helen Verdeli, the Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology and Director, Global Mental Health Lab at Teachers College, Columbia University, and is adapted from Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT). Through this workshop, community managers will learn how to identify and provide support to community members suffering from mental health distress, recognize when higher levels of support from mental health professionals are needed, and address mental health stigma in the community.

'''Bio:''' Dalal and Alaa are twin sisters and partners in their clinical, research, and advocacy endeavors. At the heart of their various efforts lies a deep commitment to reducing the burden of mental illnesses, promoting mental health equity, and improving the wellbeing of under-resourced communities locally and globally.

In 2011, the sisters founded the first national anti-stigma campaign, entitled Standing for Psychological Education and Awareness in their home country of Kuwait. Prior to starting their PhDs, Dalal and Alaa worked at the Chester M. Pierce, MD Division of Global Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital where they worked on global research, policy, and development projects in low-income and resource-poor countries.  The sisters were awarded the Vice President’s Grant for Diversity & Community Initiatives grant to commence the first anti-stigma conference in the history of Columbia University’s Teachers College, entitled “Shattering the Stigma, Breaking Down Barriers, and Creating Change” in 2016.

Currently, Dalal is a clinical fellow at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts

General Hospital, researching help-seeking behavior, mental health stigma, program development and evaluation, psychotherapy research, and psychometric research, with a specific interest in resource-poor countries. Alaa is a clinical extern at the Women’s Behavioral Health Unit, a psychiatric inpatient unit focused on women-centric issues including perinatal psychiatry, at Zucker Hillside Hospital/Northwell Health. Alaa’s research interests include heterogeneity of perinatal psychopathology, cross-cultural adaptation of psychotherapy and psychological scales, capacity-building, implementation science, and mixed-methods research.
