The Social Networking Glitter Meetup
The Social Networking Glitter Meetup is a space to connect with others in the community. Join us to talk about whatever you want: a project that you are working on, an event that caught your attention, general questions about the experience of working in the digital rights field, your insights on the latest big tech nonsense, and even your vacations. We will be happy to hear from you!
Notes
After a small introduction and some pictures of our cats, we talk about Calyx's Union, they will share big news soon.
If many people who work in tech companies are able to unionize the at will layoffs may not be as random??
In theory, unionized workplaces make layoffs harder, but the more likely outcome is that the people who are being laid off are also being offered fair severance packages (so the company will have to pay their salaries still for a certain amount of time after they lay them off, usually a few months) to ease the blow
And for the US are unions like this only available for American workers or non-american employees/ residents also have access to it?
We don' know for sure but it seems that they are only adequate at protecting american employees because unions are protected under the NLRB which enforces US labor laws, so we don't know if they'd be able to protect or fight for employees who are not protected by US laws.
We talk too about Tumba, it's a very new project, trying to make the UX of the creation of strong PGP keys with Yubikey slightly better.
