Notes

  • Unionized YouTube Workers Learn Google Laid Them All Off During City Council Meeting: https://www.404media.co/unionized-youtube-workers-learn-google-laid-them-all-off-during-city-council-meeting/
  • Not digital rights related but definitely a surveillance issue- NYC is increasing NYPD presence in subways because they want to implement more frequent bag checks. people are allowed to refuse a bag check but they have to leave the subway system if they don't comply
  • It's absolutely wild that they are creating not much of a choice disguised as a "choice" because people need to commute, and asking them to leave the subway system is absolutely a power play
  • people are very, very angry about it so i would imagine we'll see some sort of resistance but i haven't heard anything about that yet. NYC's mayor is apparently not phased by the Palestine protests at all so i don't expect protesting to work but I'm sure there will be action in response to the bag thing too
  • It's also frustrating because the subway system itself continues to get worse and less reliable, while they're spending all our tax dollars on increased police presence
  • They also increased the fare from $2.75 to $2.90 some time ago and it clearly is just to fund their surveillance efforts
  • A participant shares an article related to this and saving digital public goods from governments and says "We are just using the internet archive to store copies of the websites, we are saving them using a warc file and then sharing them with ArchiveTeam to upload them in full to internet archive"
  • On the topic of live-genocide. Recently, one participant learned that their city was a huge supporter of Palestine in independent time. Also helped them build the Mosque, donated money for the maintenance and even gifted the chandelier. When the war started people literally has throw the Israel flags on the roads and used them as waste cloths. Indian Dock workers rejected to load Israel stuff and people did online awareness regarding sending Indian labors for Israel for construction works.
