In a time when internet shutdowns silence entire populations, surveillance threatens journalists and activists, and digital spaces are increasingly weaponized against the vulnerable, we’re launching an international race with one goal:

Wow what a year 2025 is shaping up to be! And 2020 was bad…In a year full of uncertainty, loss, upheavals of governments, foreign aid and funding cuts, increases in censorship, surveillance and government imposed shutdowns, targeted killings of journalists- more than during any other war, sophisticated phishing schemes and AI threatening our truthful reality, it can be hard to find hope. Finding space for hope, solidarity, and collective strength is more important than ever.


The Digital Rights 5k will showcase the resilience and determination of activists and supporters. We want anyone who feels led to move their bodies and unite in this act of solidarity. People will be able to share stories of how digital rights have personally impacted their lives and expressed their commitment to continue fighting for these essential freedoms. Come run, walk, skip, or hop–just move to prove the importance of the internet freedom movement. This is an opportunity to move our bodies and show support. Let’s turn kilometers into action and build a freer, safer internet for all #mymotivationmymovement.

The picturesque city of Estoril is filled with energy and enthusiasm as digital rights activists meet annually for the Global Gathering. This year we want to turn the streets into a unique event, to raise awareness and support digital rights and human rights. The event will bring together a diverse group of participants, from tech enthusiasts to human rights advocates, all united by a common cause. The run itself is a 5K route along the boardwalk, passing by remarkable views of the Atlantic Ocean and historic buildings perfectly preserved by the city of Lisbon.

Digital Rights 5K: Freedom in Motion 🏃🏽‍♀️

Wow what a year 2025 is shaping up to be! And 2020 was bad…In a year full of uncertainty, loss, upheavals of governments, foreign aid and funding cuts, increases in censorship, surveillance and government imposed shutdowns, targeted killings of journalists- more than during any other war, sophisticated phishing schemes and AI threatening our truthful reality, it can be hard to find hope. Finding space for hope, solidarity, and collective strength is more important than ever.

As part of the Global Gathering, we invite you to join the first-ever Digital Rights 5K: Freedom in Motion, a unique and optional community event designed to help us reconnect, recharge, and remind ourselves why this movement matters. Together, we’ll walk, jog, or run a 5K loop along the breathtaking Atlantic Ocean in Estoril, Portugal. Whether you come to stretch your legs, share stories, or simply be present with others, this is a chance to celebrate resilience, affirm our shared values, remember our motivation, and carry forward the spirit of freedom, access, and human dignity.
