Notes and Feedback:
If you are going to the Global Gathering, what conversations or training would you like to see at the Outline Village?
- Primarily want to meet the Outline team.
- Have a TWA prototype, would love to sit down with the team to see if we can take that further. +1
- The types of profiles, locations and threats people can use outline in and for.
- Understand how Outline differs from other proxies and VPNs in terms of privacy of users.
How can the NEW Outline Community Hub best support you?
SDK:
- Get useful information, research and networking, such as developments and threats in each region.
- Learn how to this Outline SDK can be used and helpful in challenging contexts.
- Creation of some kind of explainer for newcomers about Outline and the Censorship World. It's hard for mobile app developers to understand how censorship works. All the different transports and how they work.
- In addition, provide support with integration of the Outline SDK
- Create a space where people report certain Internet blockings (e.g., not working in X country). Monitoring the situation and discussing.
- A VM automatically opens remote access for people to observe and test censorship?
- A portal/website that accepts (Shadowsocks) access keys and test the keys in different regions. People will get reports back from this portal to check whether the key is working or not.
- A place to share access keys (maybe protect accessing keys with captcha and multiple puzzles to prevent bots from crawling them)
- Basic onboarding instructions of using the Outline SDK
- Information on how to embedding the SDK into our app
- Basic circumvention strategies for beginners
- Understanding of the Outline Roadmap
- Provide a list of different service providers that are using Outline, and what they can offer and need. Ie, support running servers, etc
- Knowledge sharing (both information and experiences), such as how censors are blocking Outline, and what can be done to mitigate those blocks; techniques and expertise, for example how are people measuring/detecting blocking?
- Standardize and better understand metrics, including blocking on the server side (ie, tunnel time, tunnel time per key, etc).
- Understanding pros and cons of Cloud based servers vs home based technology, and consider the different dimensions for metrics.
- Secure DNS. What is TLS Record Fragmentation. How it works and how the Outline SDK does in the app
- Understand how to use Outline tools to support communities and organizations facing Internet shutdowns, attacks, vpn blocking. Ideally for both scenarios: preparation & ad hoc setup.
OUTLINE MANAGER
- Training and education. Also, information-sharing about the current situations in different regional contexts. In addition, understand where Outline is working (and where its not).
- For small scale providers, how to have keys more resilient and alternatives to redistributing keys manually ( Dynamic keys). Also, learn about tactics to make servers more resilient.
- Learn about partnership and training opportunities, as well as learn about financial support to carry out training for journalists. Also, more Outline servers for these purposes.
- Suggestions and feedback on FreeSocks.org
- Explore ways to make Outline more resilient to blocking.
- How to setup an Outline server without graphical user interface. OR how to integrate the client-part in an android/ios (or a web-) app to give the clients a button/checkbox to access content through the outline-server or directly.
- Better understand how "easily" a client might be detected using outline (to better conduct risk assessments for users); is there a way to circumvent installing VPN/Circumvention app? And can you delete VPN config file during critical situations.
- Support trying to make FreeSOCKS (unredacted.org) a place where people can go to get free keys, but also to be an opensource key distribution platform (FreeSOCKS: Runs on Cloudflare and free to deploy) https://github.com/unredacted/freesocks-control-plane
- What are the user risks when Outline is detected and censored?
- To be able to exchange experiences with others, switching between intra and proxy based experiences. Would love to hear other experiences there, and would like to intergrate intra-transport
- Understanding the privacy of using Outlines. How private is the connection?
- Discuss relaying usability issues with Outline Client and Outline Manager.

Calling all current and future users of Outline and Outline SDK!

To improve community support for Outline and Outline SDK, Jigsaw is joining forces with Team CommUNITY.
Join us on September 12 at 9am EDT / 1pm UTC to learn about the NEW Outline Community Hub and what it can offer you.
This is a great opportunity to provide feedback on what you need from the hub, and meet others using Outline and Outline SDK. In addition, if you are registered for the 2024 Global Gathering, we want to hear from you on what sessions, trainings, or support you would like to see in the Jigsaw Booth @ GG.
Notably, the hub is created for technologists and non-technologists alike, including:
- Outline Service Providers want to improve their understanding of Outline Manager and learn how to manage their service more efficiently.
- Circumvention App Creators who want to use Outline's foundational building blocks and open-source strategies.
- Media & Communications App Creators who want to embed advanced networking strategies directly into their apps to bypassing unwanted network interference and unlocking access to their content.
- Users of Outline Client trying to circumvent online barriers to access the Internet, including activists, CSO's, journalists, and tech-aware citizens.
Leading the interactive meetup will be the Jigsaw Team and Sandy Ordonez from Team CommUNITY.
