The Alarming Growing Trend of Digital Identification Systems
Workshop: The Alarming Growing Trend of Digital Identification Systems.
Who: Amber Sinha
Date: Tuesday, October 13th
Time: 9:00am EDT / 1:00pm UTC+0 (other times below)
Jurisdictions across the world have been exploring digital identity systems to enable social distancing, provide benefits and key financial transactions In Peru, online solutions have been introduced for citizens to access medical test results and benefits; in Brazil, for unregistered demographics who are not enrolled in the CadUnico program, there are ongoing discussions to allow informal unregistered workers to enrol using online self-declaration. Meanwhile in Kenya, the government is calling for the use of mobile money rather than cash. This has resulted in growing proposals for Fintech lending algorithms to aid both identification of beneficiaries and aid the fiscal need for cash.
The rise of use of digital ID systems comes with grave privacy, surveillance and exclusion concerns. Thus, there is currently an urgent need for more research and discussion about the appropriate use of Digital ID Systems. Join Amber from India’s Centre for Internet and Society, who will discuss the evaluation framework they have created for digital identity systems.
// We will be hosting a 25 minute post-workshop networking exercise to allow folks to meet others who share their interest, and strengthen collaborations across various lines. Make sure to schedule in 25 minutes extra on your calendar, if you are interested in joining //
