Trauma has become a commonly used mental health term. However, most people have a lack of understanding of what constitutes trauma, and how it impacts their body and mind.

By attending this session, participants will learn about:

* How trauma is defined and its psychological impacts, according to the field of psychology.
* How trauma shows up in the body and its effect on psychological health
* Critics of the application of Western trauma models, especially for communities in the global south,
* How trauma is understood and expressed within a person’s environment and communities.

'''Biography:'''

Nawal Muradwij is a PhD candidate in Clinical Psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the CUNY Graduate Center. She is a child and adolescent therapist who has worked in college counseling, foster care, and inpatient settings. Her research focuses on understanding how collective trauma impacts community mental health and how art can facilitate collective reckoning and meaning making.
